In order to compete with Toyota Highlander released in 2002 in North American market, both Honda and Nissan released their own mid-size crossover SUVs, Honda Pilot and Nissan Murano. The 1st generation Murano with codename Z50 was released in 2002. Until now, it is the 3rd generation Murano which was released from 2014 to the present.

There are some variants of Nissan Murano in different countries such as Nissan Murano SE in the U.S. and Nissan Murano Ti in Australia. In China, 1st generation Murano was imported from Japan with high price, and it was named as unofficial Chinese name 美人奴(Meirennv).

In 2007, the 2nd generation Murano with codename Z51 in 2007 as the 2009 model year, but in fact, it went sale in January 2008, both the exterior and interior were changed a lot. In July, 2011, the 2nd generation Murano was released in China with local official Chinese name 楼兰(Loulan), and it was manufactured by joint venture enterprise Dongfeng Nissan.

In 2014, the 3rd generation Murano with codename Z52 was released with new exterior as the 2015 model year, and it was not marketed in Japan, Australia and New Zealand, instead, it was manufactured in the U.S. China and Russia.
